Akkar, Through Her Eyes: Photo ActionSaturday March 19 2016View PhotosSee Event Photos

Akkar Network for Development partnered with FRAME to work with a group of seven women on a project that encourages self-expression and story-telling through photography. The essence of this photo action was to give women the tools to document their community using the universal language of the image - to document and tell their story to an international audience.

A workshop on basic documentary photography was provided and led by internationally acclaimed photojournalist Patrick Baz. Participants then developed a series of themes related to their communities and lives to facilitate the photography.

The northernmost Lebanese district of Akkar, with its expansive coastal plain and eastern mountain range, is known for its archeological and environmental richness. The rural region is relatively isolated and characterized by chronic poverty and limited access to basic public services.

The photos make up a mosaic of powerful images shedding light on both the strength and struggles of Akkari women through the eyes of those who know their communities best. In the images we see women as leaders and care providers, activists and change-makers, teachers and workers, as those who meet struggle with patience, and those who fortify their community through their hard work, perseverance and love.
